American Hanoverian Society (www.hanoverian.org)

The American Hanoverian Society, Inc. is committed to the highly selective breeding standards as practiced since 1735 in the Hannover breeding area of Germany. The AHS maintains a public registry of Hanoverians, brands foals and approves mares and stallions for the breeding program.

 




Mid-Atlantic Hanoverian Breeders (mahb.homestead.com)

The Mid-Atlantic Hanoverian Breeders Club, Inc. (MAHB) is the first regional club recognized by the American Hanoverian Society. MAHB was formed in April 1995 to serve members by offering educational events and to promote horse sales through combined advertising efforts. In 2000, MAHB organized the Fall Sales Fest as a marketing alternative to the pressured auction environment. MAHB also sponsors an annual Mare Show and Mare Performance Test.

 




VA Polytechnic Institute and State U (www.equine.vt.edu)

Marefield has had an association with the breeding program at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg through past donations of frozen semen from Arrian and Rienzi. The herd maintained at the university offers students a hands-on experience in breeding, foaling, rearing and training. An annual auction of the offspring from the breeding herd serves to raise funds for this worthwhile program’s support.

 
 

BREEDERS, TRAINERS, REARERS & OTHER FARMS

 




Buck Branch Farm (sherrakosch@lynchburg.net)

Bob Orton and Sherra Kosch have recently expanded their training facility through the annexation of a neighboring farm that has provided hayfields and paddocks with run-in sheds for the purpose of rearing young horses. This has been a long-term goal at Buck Branch and it is a welcome facility for breeders who need a place for their young horses to grow up in an environment managed by experienced horsemen. Bob and Sherra have horses for sale ranging from yearlings to confirmed performance veterans.

 




Classic Sires (www.classicsires.com)

Anne Schmidt of Classic Sires has been importing frozen semen from the Hanoverian State Stud at Celle since 1987. Marefield’s first association with Classic Sires was in 1990 when we bred Donnerwetter with Wenzel semen to produce Windhover. We have since obtained frozen semen from Classic Sires for many of the breeding matches with Celle stallions we have made over the years, including an early successful match of Weltmeyer and Moira which produced Wintersong. Anne recently started importing semen from selected private German Hanoverian stallions, as well.

 




Hilton Farm (www.hiltonfarm.com)

Hilton Farm in Orange, VA is the host of the annual regional AHS/VhW Inspection. It also provides a base for Erin Sweeney who manages and trains the Hilton horses and freelances from the facility. The Marefield horses in training at Hilton benefit from the attention they receive from the professional Hilton staff and from turnout in the luxurious rolling green pastures of the farm. Hilton has an official quarantine station for imported breeding stock, and they stand the stallions Antibes, Letkiss and Portofino. Horses for sale.

 




Hof Clasen (www.hofclasen.de)

Marefield has kept mares for breeding in Germany with the Clasen family since 1991. Hof Clasen also boards horses for other American clients. An active member of the local breeding and riding clubs, Joerg Clasen is a knowledgeable guide to German bloodlines and will help clients find the horse they are looking for. The Hof Clasen website additionally provides a clearinghouse for the sale of horses from breeders in the Verden area.

 




Hof Kleemeyer (www.hof-kleemeyer.de)

Marefield owns three mares from the Kleemeyer breeding program and our association did not end with these purchases. The stallion Winterlight was prepared for his 70-Day Stallion Performance Test at Hof Kleemeyer by their long-time resident trainer Ingrid Wilkens. Another Marefield stallion, Dauphin, was prepared at Hof Kleemeyer for his licensing and was started under saddle by Ingrid before he joined the Adelheidsdorf training program. Hof Kleemeyer always has young horses for sale. They can be seen on the farm’s extensive website, which also provides news of local mare and foal shows.

 




Britta Johnston (Brittajohnston@aol.com)

Britta Johnston has Marefield horses in training for their mare performance tests and for sale; she additionally works with our young horses and shows them in hand. Britta trains horses for other clients and has a large number of riding students. Originally from Germany, Britta has maintained many contacts and regularly imports horses for her students. The hallmark of Britta’s approach is her concern with matching the right horse to the right rider, whether beginner or advanced. Britta’s insight into both horse and rider has made for many happy partnerships.

 




North Star Farm (www.NorthStarFarms.com)

Judy Hedreen’s North Star Farm in Arlington, WA is a large facility for boarding and training that forms an extension of her Sylvan Farm breeding operation. The Marefield stallion Rienzi started his active breeding career from this base in 2003. Judy also stands her Oldenburg stallion Agincourt at North Star when he is not on the jumping circuit. North Star Farm frequently is host to inspections, clinics and public demonstrations for the AHS, GOV and USDF. Boarding, training, and horses for sale.

 




Shadow Fox Farm (www.studbook.com/shadowfox)

Laura Whitford oversees a high-quality breeding operation, trains, and rides at her Shadow Fox Farm in Haymarket, VA. Marefield benefited from Laura’s expertise when she had Daalny for a season and rode her to the year-end VADA/NOVA Chapter Award and 4th place in VA at Training Level. Laura maintains contacts in Germany and frequently has access to outstanding young horses for sale from those sources. She also has her own carefully bred youngsters to offer.

 




Erin Sweeney (erins_sweeney@earthlink.net)

Erin Sweeney freelances out of Hilton Farm where she trains and shows the resident stallions, and manages the American branch of his Hanoverian breeding program for owner Otto Fuchs. Erin has Marefield horses in training with her at Hilton for mare performance tests and for sale. With so many connections to other Hanoverians, Erin can provide a number of options for interested buyers–from young horses just starting under saddle to more experienced campaigners training at the upper levels.

 




Woodridge Farm (www.woodridgefarm.com)

Vanessa Carlson manages Marefield’s stallion Arrian out of her Woodridge Farm in Claremore, OK where she runs an extensive Hanoverian and Oldenburg breeding program and stands her own stallions Wradar and Frohwind. Woodridge is an annual host to inspections for both registries. Vanessa has been a board member of the AHS since 1995 and was appointed to the Mare and Stallion Committee in 2002. Woodridge has young horses from foals to prospects working under saddle for sale.
