Not all of Marefield’s breeding stock have been exhaustively researched in advance. In spite of our concentration on finding fillies from strong and proven motherlines, we confess to impulse buying on more than one occasion.
Allegra was acquired at a Verden Elite Foal and Broodmare Auction. Her type, movement and an interesting pedigree recommended her even though nothing was known of her antecedents on the dam side. She had also acquitted herself well at her MPT and was an SPA already in foal for the next year.
That first foal was a correct, typey and big-moving colt who possessed his mother’s eye-catching charm. A stallion rearer in the Netherlands quickly purchased him, and we took this as an early indication that perhaps our instincts hadn't been wrong.
Daughter D'Allegra further confirmed Allegra’s strength as a producer. This typey filly went on to become Young Horse Champion and Reserve Grand Champion, VADA/NOVA 1999. D’Allegra again earned recognition at breed shows as a 3-year old. That year, she also was the highest-scoring Hanoverian in the US on the 2001 AHS/VhW Inspection Tour.
Allegra’s 2002 filly, Felicia, is another elegant type with good gaits. She was imported in November of that year and will remain at Marefield where it is hoped she will join the breeding program in a few years, continuing the influence of that “lucky impulse.”
