Winner of the Ihlienworth Mare Show as a 2-year old, Moira earned the high score at her AHS/VhW Inspection site a year later. Bred primarily along dressage lines, there is one outstanding note for jumping in her pedigree–grandam Adlerklette was the dam of Deister.
As the oldest of the horses Marefield imported in 1990, Moira was the first to contribute to the next generation and, we hoped, the start of a major motherline. Perhaps naming her for the Greek Fate was an unwise choice; Moira and her offspring have been plagued by misfortune. She is a reluctant breeder who over the years to date has produced only five foals, three of which are fillies.
Fauna showed considerable promise as a young horse, winning the Yearling Fillies class at Devon in 1995; two years later, Fauna developed EPM, which has made her unsuitable for breeding. Third daughter Arria achieved the babysitter status of her older sister when she broke her pelvis as a yearling. To start a mare family, however, it takes only one to carry the line into the next generation; in Moira's first daughter, SPS Wintersong, we believe Marefield may already have that mare.
Wintersong was Grand Champion, Devon 1993. Sent to Germany, Wintersong earned the high score at her MPT and was winner of her class at the Verden Mare Show in 1995. Since that time she has produced six foals, all of them fillies.
Wintersong’s first foal, EM Destine (Davignon), owned by Dr. Deborah Davenport, was site champion at her AHS/VhW Inspection in 1999 and tied for 3rd place nationwide that year. Destine's full sister, EMC Decuma, was born to Wintersong in 1998. In 2001, Decuma tied for the highest MPT score in the nation and she won the 3-Year-Old Fillies Materiale class, DAD–with a score of 80%.
In autumn 2002, Wintersong’s third daughter, Aquitaine (Alabaster), found a new home in Florida with Linda Crabtree and Katie Wooten. At the same time, Solstice, a weanling by Sandro Hit, was imported to Marefield where we hope she will be our second carrier of the Moira line. A 2003 daughter by Hofrat remains in Germany. She was joined by a Dauphin daughter in April 2004.
Meanwhile, Moira’s son Arcturus is enjoying a happy life as Meredith Smith’s adored pleasure mount, occasionally experiencing the excitement of a romp with the Warrenton Hunt. Last-born, Caliburn, awaits the start of his training with owner and upper-level dressage competitor, Judith Farnsworth-Newcomb.
