HERITAGE
When Dauphin’s dam, SPS Fabia, was found to be carrying her first foal near summer’s end 1993, it was a happy surprise since we thought her late June breeding had been unsuccessful. One person, however, was greatly disappointed in the development. Kathrin Danzer, who was preparing the mare for her MPT, had also been harboring a plan for heading Fabia toward the Bundeschampionat. She quite rightly foresaw an end to those ambitions with this new development. As it happened, an injury forced Fabia to lay-up at Hof Clasen soon after she checked in foal and even her MPT had to be postponed that year.
In 1994, Isabel Clasen started Fabia in training again as soon as her late-born foal was weaned. With very few weeks for preparation, Isabel had the mare going under saddle in time to catch one of the last MPTs of the season. It was another surprise present–and an indicator of Fabia’s heritage of rideability–when she acquitted herself so well at the impromptu test, earning 8s on all her gaits and in both rideability scores.
In 1993, Fabia had received an overall inspection score of 8–with a 10 for her trot–and she was also named champion of the Bruchhausen-Vilsen Mare Show. In these accomplishments she was following a family tradition. Her dam, SPS Papermoon, was winner of the local mare show more than once and in 1990, she was named champion of her age division at the Bundestutenschau. Papermoon was considered as among their most valuable mares by the heirs of her breeder, Otto Schulte-Frohlinde. When the herd was consolidated after the death of the Groenwohldhof founder, she was one of a relative handful to be kept in the breeding program. Papermoon is the dam of the stallion Don Campione; her dam, Alaska, is grandam of the stallion Pik Donnerhall.
SIBLINGS
If Papermoon’s charm and type can be seen in her Feiner Stern daughter's produce, Fabia’s proven rideability also has been transmitted to succeeding generations. The firstborn of Dauphin’s full siblings, EM Daalny, was successfully ridden at her 2000 MPT by fellow Hanoverian breeder Laura Whitford. Laura also took the confirmed broodmare (with two foals to her credit at the time) through an outstanding performance season that year, earning the VADA/NOVA Chapter Year-end Award for Training Level and achieving 4th-place ranking in the state of Virginia. A second full sister to Dauphin, Joerg and Isabel Clasen’s SPS Deleila, also was ridden by Isabel the one year the mare did not get in foal. Isabel next discovered how the rideability transmits to yet another generation when she rode Deleila’s 1999 Wenzel daughter for sales presentation. In the US, Joanne Lawrence is working with Daalny’s firstborn, Rhaebus (Ramiro’s Bube), and the professional trainer reports that he is the “best purchase” she has ever made. Daalny’s second foal, Cotignac (Contucci), started his performance career in 2003 and was also shown in hand. At the Morven Park Sport Horse Breeding Show in June of that year, Cotignac won the mature horse division of the Hanoverian IBC for owner Jenny Rambaugh. Later at the same event Cotignac, under rider/trainer Carole Lawrence, was winner of the materiale class for geldings and stallions, 4- to 6-years old.
In 2002, Dauphin’s half sister, EMC Folie (Fabriano), owned by Chris Rush, further proved the talent of the line when she was named champion of the AHS/VhW Inspection at Hilton Farm. She also achieved the top score in the MPT, doing well in all phases including jumping–where she earned an 8 in the ability category. Later in the season, Folie qualified for the 2002 BLM Finals and the 2003 ABIC Finals. In 2003, Folie qualified for the US National FEI 5-Year Old Championships with the highest score (7.92) for Region I and an average score that was the second highest in the nation.
In 2003, Dauphin’s two younger full sisters in the US were competed at breed shows for the first time and both qualified for the USDF/Cosequin Northeast Breeders Finals at Devon: Diotima was named Res. Champ. with a score of 80.80% while Dauphine scored 79.20% to come in 3rd. Additionally, the 3-year-old Diotima was presented for inspection and did her MPT to earn the elite mare candidacy. At year-end Diotima earned 2nd place in the US for 3-year-old fillies, USDF Sport Horse Breeding Division with a score of 81.400%. Beautifully ridden by Erin Sweeney in each of her three competitions, Diotima also achieved 1st in the nation in the USDF 3-year-old filly Materiale Awards with a score of 81.000%. The 2-year-old Dauphine tied for 5th nationally in her age group in the USDF Sport Horse Breeding Division with 75.300%. These scores earned the sisters placings in the American Hanoverian Society’s year-end awards, Young Horse–Fillies Division: Diotima was Res. Champ. with 82%; Dauphine tied for 15th with 75.30%.
